York Students engage in experiential learning in Costa Rica

York University students are stepping out of the traditional classroom to experience the principles of sustainability and ecology first-hand at the University’s Las Nubes EcoCampus in Costa Rica. 25 students in the Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change (EUC) had the opportunity to visit the EcoCampus, located within the Alexander Skutch Biological Corridor in southern Costa Rica, as part of an experiential education opportunity.

York University’s summertime, faculty-led study abroad opportunities continue to be popular post-pandemic, and it’s not only 20-somethings who are taking advantage of the chance to broaden their cultural horizons. Mature students, too, are registering for courses that take them across the globe. York International, the University’s hub for both international students and international education programs, supports Faculties and academic units in offering study abroad opportunities led by York U course directors, and mature students are eager to participate.

Today’s 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings announcement recognizes that work as York jumped five places to rank 35th in the world.
York welcomes Philippines Secretary for Foreign Affairs

York University and the Philippines have developed a deep-rooted relationship that’s “mutually beneficial,” the Philippines Secretary for Foreign Affairs Enrique Manalo said during his visit to the University’s Keele campus on Friday, May 10, 2024. Manalo stopped by York University on the last day of his Canadian trip, to meet with members of York’s leadership and faculty researchers with a strong interest in the Philippines and its diaspora. He was accompanied by the country’s top diplomats to Canada, including Ambassador Maria Andrelita Austria; Assistant Secretary Jose Victor Chan-Gonzaga, Office of American Affairs, Department of Foreign Affairs; and Toronto Consul General Angelica Escalona.

Chinese physician earns Honours BSc at York

With his medical degree from China in hand, Chenyang Yue immigrated to Canada and returned to university to prepare himself for a career in the Canadian health-care sector. International Policy Ideas Challenge 2020 - Call for proposals

Global Affairs Canada, in collaboration with the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) recently announced a call for proposals for the fifth edition of the International Policy Ideas Challenge.
Applicants are invited to submit brief proposals. Proposals should outline a trend or dynamic affecting Canadian foreign policy that applicants believe needs additional study. Preference will be for ideas that fall under one of the themes indicated below, however, proposals related to other emerging issues and trends affecting Canada’s international policy priorities will also be considered.

Philippines Consul General Toronto holds talk on TAAL and Philippine Volcanoes

Mr. Jose Dominick Santos Guballa, a Filipino Ph.D. student in Earth Sciences at the University of Toronto, held a talk on “Taal and Other Philippine Volcanoes: An Overview” at the premises of the Philippine Consulate General in Toronto on 12 February 2020.
In his welcome remarks, Consul General Orontes Castro explained that the talk is part of the Consulate’s information campaign for the Filipino Community in Ontario on important developments in the Philippines, such as the recent eruption of Taal Volcano and its impact on society.

Two $900K grants will allow physicists to test for electron electric dipole moment
The reason why there is a lot of matter in the Universe, such as electrons and protons, but no anti-matter (anti-electrons and antiprotons) is a riddle many scientists worldwide are still trying to solve. York University Distinguished Research Professor Eric Hessels of the Faculty of Science recently received two grants of $900,000 each over three years from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to begin a program that he hopes will help bring clarity.

Conor Douglas, an assistant professor of Science and Technology Studies at York University, believes there are plenty of inequalities in the ways we produce and access pharmaceuticals. From his PhD research on patient participation in medical research to his post-doctoral studies on expensive drugs and coverage decision making for rare diseases, Douglas has devoted much of his career to interrogating the significant established power interests and issues of access and inequality at play in one of the major tools through which Western medicine is practiced.

Biometrics can now be given in Canada

As of December 3, 2019, fingerprints and photos (biometrics) can be given at designated Service Canada offices. Biometrics are valid for 10 years and are generally required in all applications for visas, study permits, work permits, extensions, permanent residence and refugee or asylum status.
Help make a family's Holiday Season great! Adopt a Family - York International!

The adopt-a-family program, run through the Jane and Finch Community Centre, focuses on helping families in need enjoy a special holiday season. This year York International, in collaboration with the York Athletics and Recreation administration has adopted their own family for the first time. The York International family is a family of 5 that is new to Canada; a single mum with two girls and twin boys. We ask the global community to join us in providing support to this family as they spend their first holiday season in Canada. Some of their wishes include kitchen supplies, warm blankets, winter clothing, back packs, makeup, and a family computer to help them study at home.
How to contribute: drop by the York International office at 200 York Lanes with either money or a gift card to Walmart. Tax receipts are available upon request; if you would like a tax receipt, please leave your name and contact information with the front desk staff.
No matter what you celebrate during this season (Christmas, Hanukah, Winter Solstice, etc), we hope that you’ll consider giving what you can to our ‘Adopt a Family’ family to make their Holiday great!

Rise in Fraudulent or “Scam” Calls

Recently, there have been a number of scam calls from individuals claiming to be employees of Service Canada, Canada Revenue Agency, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada, as well as the local police agency.
An increasing number of international students have reported receiving phone calls regarding their social insurance numbers (SIN). The caller threatens to make an arrest if no immediate action is taken. The scammers use Caller ID Spoofing to disguise their phone numbers with legitimate numbers for government agencies. Read more
