Course Overview

Advance student knowledge of the research process through discussion and application to real-world studies in focused areas of social determinants of global health, using a variety of teaching methods.  

Facilitate discussion of the selected topics, current barriers, and opportunities for addressing and social determinants of global health and population health needs.  

Guide students in the production of projects or other identified activities through feedback on their acquisition of knowledge on the selected topic across the term.  

This course reinforces our academic partnerships with the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ghana. UHAS is the primary academic institution focusing on Health for the Volta Region in Ghana and a York FoH strategic partner. This course offers York students an opportunity to engage in many facets of African health systems and perspectives thereby expanding their global health understanding. The course is a blend of interactive academic, social and cultural events providing a comprehensive experiential learning environment.     

Program Highlights

  • Interactive academic workshops on emerging health conditions of public health interest, indigenous African culture, socio-cultural issues in health, traditional and alternative medicine, and health systems in Africa. Field trips, community visits and engagement through service-learning opportunities. Social and cultural networking events.
  • Visits to the breath-taking mountain Afadjato (Ghana’s highest mountain), Tagbo falls, Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, the Amedzofe canopy walk and Cultural Village.
  • Tours of Elmina and Cape Coast castles, and other intriguing historical national monuments can be arranged at an additional cost.

Deposits and Payment Deadlines

To secure a spot in this course, you'll need to submit a non-refundable deposit of $500 to York International. If selected, you will receive an email with instructions to pay your CAD500 deposit and program fee before the deadline.

A $500 non-refundable deposit per course must be submitted by the deadline listed in the email. These fees are non-refundable once charged and are taken as a commitment that the student will participate in the study abroad course. All courses are capped, and spots are considered based on the course instructor’s decision.

PLEASE NOTE: You do not need to come to York International Office. All payments will be conducted online. We only accept Visa and Mastercard. No cash or cheques.

Financial Support & Budget Planning

All participants of this course will receive up to CAD500 York International Mobility Award (YIMA) upon completion of the Pre-Departure Training and Travel Risk Requirements.
