Credit Transfer

Student Responsibilities

  • You should meet with an academic advisor to determine what degree requirements are outstanding.
  • You need to meet with the department to determine any course credit exclusions for the courses you wish to take on exchange
  • Students who go on International Exchange are required to complete the International Exchange Program Course Assessment Form
  • The International Exchange Program Course Assessment Form outlines which courses a student will be taking at the host institution and how the course(s) will be applied to their degree (major/minor, general education, or elective)
  • The student must bring detailed course descriptions/outlines to the department to verify if the course they wish to take on International Exchange is equivalent to a course at York University
  • Students MUST speak with the UPD/UPA of their home academic unit to complete the course assessment form and get sign off
  • Once you have completed the form, submit it to York International

Please note: All course credits you wish to take on Exchange MUST be assessed for credit transfer by your academic department(s) BEFORE you go overseas.

Enrolment at Host University

  • Your Host University will provide you with instructions on how to enroll in courses
  • Countries/institutions have different credit systems
    • For example: 3 York credits = 6 ECTS
  • What does 3 York Credits = ? at my host university
    • Please contact the exchange coordinator at your host institution who can help with credit system
  • Change a course while overseas? An updated course assessment form is required to be signed by your academic unit at York University and submitted to York International

Enrolment at Host University

  • All students on exchange enroll and pay tuition fees to York University (not to the host institution!
  • Students must maintain full-time status at YorkU and host institution while on exchange; therefore, students must maintain 3 courses or 9 courses while at York University on the Exchange program.
  • Enrollment at York (YI Exchanges)
    • INEX 15 (5 courses)
    • INEX 12 (4 courses)
    • INEX 9 (3 courses)
  • Your enrolment at York University while on exchange will give you eligibility for OSAP
  • Course codes and enrollment instructions will be communicated to students prior to departure
  • Course assessment forms will be required before enrollment at YorkU is possible.

After Exchange Courses are Completed

  • The host institution will send your official transcript to York International
    • Tip: It is good to keep a transcript for your own records as it will be necessary to present your transcript when applying for graduate or professional schools after graduation
  • Credits will be confirmed upon receipt of an official transcript and course assessment form from York International.
  • The transcript will have grades according to the host institution grading system
    • Please note: a passing grade at the host institution is required. This is necessary in order to be given credit transfer
  • The Office of the University Registrar will match the courses on the course assessment form to the transcript
  • If a student takes an additional course(s) or changes a course at the host institution, it is essential that they get an updated International Exchange Program Course Assessment Form signed by academic unit and submitted to York International. Failure to do so will lead to challenges and delay for credit transfer upon your return to York.
  • If you do not update the course assessment while abroad, you will need to seek approval for the newly added or changed courses once you return to YorkU
  • If you take additional courses that exceed your INEX course enrollment you will need to pay addition tuition fee upon your arrival back to York and before credit transfer is applied
  • Needs an updated course assessment form confirming credit is transferable
  • Will need to pay for an additional 3* credits upon return to YorkU before receiving credit transfer
    • Example:
      • student is approved for 4 courses (INEX12)
      • They added a course once overseas
      • Needs an updated course assessment form confirming credit is transferable
      • Will need to pay for an additional 3* credits upon return to YorkU before receiving credit transfer
