Eligibility:

  • Spanish language pre-requisite for this course, which is GL/SP 2002 or AP/SP 2000, or equivalent. This pre-requisite ensures that students are at least at an intermediate level of Spanish.
  • This is required because although students can read English or French translations of all the material and submit written assignments in either English of French (except for Spanish majors), all lectures, class interactions, and the entirety of the field trip are done in Spanish. It is also essential that all students can sustain conversations with local people.
Language: English & Spanish Program Dates: Winter semester 2025, with study abroad dates in reading week from February 15th to 21st, 2025.


Course Overview

GL/SP 4706 Hispanic Geopoetics is a course about the geography and the territory of the iconic Latin American novel Hundred Years of Solitude, by the Nobel Prize author Gabriel García Márquez.
Please note that this course has a mandatory 10-day field trip to the Colombian Caribbean during the reading week of the winter term of 2025 (February 15-21).

Program Highlights

Organized in collaboration with our host institution, the University of Magdelena at Santa Marta, the experience abroad will give us the opportunity to interact with local students and faculty through different activities and visits, while engaging in collaborative projects and workshops with local communities and artist collectives.

Deposits and Payment Deadlines

To secure a spot in this course, you'll need to submit a non-refundable deposit of $500 to York International. If selected, you will receive an email with instructions to pay your CAD500 deposit and program fee before the deadline.

A $500 non-refundable deposit per course must be submitted by the deadline listed in the email. These fees are non-refundable once charged and are taken as a commitment that the student will participate in the study abroad course. All courses are capped, and spots are considered based on the course instructor’s decision.

PLEASE NOTE: You do not need to come to York International Office. All payments will be conducted online. We only accept Visa and Mastercard. No cash or cheques.

Financial Support & Budget Planning

All participants of this course will receive up to CAD500 York International Mobility Award (YIMA) upon completion of the Pre-Departure Training and Travel Risk Requirements.
