There are many ways that students can be sustainable while on a mobility program. Here are some ideas:
- Consider sustainable forms of transportation: Walking, cycling, carpooling, and public transit
Not only are these forms of transportation eco-friendly, they are also more affordable and probably less stressful. Not to mention, walking and cycling are great ways to get your workout done!
- Say 'NO' to plastic
If possible, use reusable water bottles, straws, and utensils. Plastic bags and Styrofoam containers are commonly found during international coastal cleanups. They can also take up to 1000 years to fully decompose, endangering wildlife and the ecosystem.
- Support local businesses
Many of us like to bring home souvenirs as a reminder of our travels. When purchasing souvenirs, we can be sustainable by supporting local businesses as much as possible. The waste generated by unsustainable manufacturing negatively impacts the environment in multiple ways. These handcrafted products may be more expensive upfront, but they are a better investment in the long run.
- Engage in local efforts that promote sustainability
If participating in a long-term exchange, get involved in local sustainable projects in your community. This is a great way to learn from locals about their experiences and contribute to these initiatives.
