The International College of Liberal Arts (iCLA) at Yamanashi Gakuin University is a four-year, American style liberal arts college in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. The primary language of instruction is English, with the exception of some Japanese language and cultural courses. Over 60% of our students and full-time faculty members are from overseas, creating a truly multi-cultural environment. Located just 90 minutes west of Tokyo, Yamanashi is famed for its breathtaking landscapes, historic sites, hot springs, hiking trails, fruit orchards and vineyards, against the iconic backdrop of Mount Fuji. iCLA offers students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the very essence of Japan and its culture, whilst acquiring a contemporary and globally relevant education at our state-of-the-art facilities. Students may stay on-campus with other international and Japanese students in our residence hall designed by the 2013 Pritzker award-winning architect, Toyo Ito, and which has direct access to our classrooms, administration, and faculty offices.

Exchange students may choose from a variety of academic disciplines such as Global Business & Economics, Political Science, Interdisciplinary Arts, Japan Studies, Sociology & Psychology, Quantitative Reasoning & Natural Sciences, Data Science, and Health & Physical Education. Especially unique are our for-credit experiential workshops in traditional Japanese culture and martial arts. Exchange students can study Japanese language starting from any level, even complete beginner, to advanced level. Our small student to faculty ratio allows for close interaction and care. In addition, our “iEXPerience Program (iEXP)” offers a variety of experiential learning opportunities. Going beyond the traditional four walls of the classroom, iEXP enriches students’ learning experience through exploration of the local Yamanashi area and engagement in fieldwork and workshops. Program events incorporate interdisciplinary academic input from our faculty, adding an extra-curricular dimension to iCLA’s liberal arts program.
