International Education Week 2024 Launches

 

York University joins education institutions around the world in celebrating International Education Week (IEW) 2024.  

IEW is an annual celebration of international education and exchange worldwide that highlights the importance of international education, promotes the benefits of education abroad and global engagement and recognizes the contributions of international students in strengthening intercultural understanding. 
 

York-IEW 2024 include global engagement activities and events organized throughout the week detailed below. 

 

Monday, November 18 
1:00 – 2:00 pm   Go Global Information Session – Exchange 
 
Are you interested in going abroad? An academic exchange allows students to study abroad for one semester (4 months) at one of our many partner universities worldwide. Students will travel to a different country, earn credits towards their degree, and learn about their academic field from an alternative perspective. Don't miss out on this opportunity of a lifetime! Neighbourhood Exploration Join us for Neighbourhood Exploration to experience a journey that takes you beyond campus and the classroom. Each month we travel to a Toronto neighbourhood or local destination to discover new hidden spots, local businesses, parks and culture.

SPOTLIGHT: York’s Global Skills Opportunity (GSO) funded projects  

Join us in celebrating the impactful journey of York University students who participated in the Indigenous Student Exchange, Go Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Action, Student Challenge and the Trilateral Student Exchange (TSE) Program from 2021 to 2024.  

This video project gallery will showcase the outstanding projects and achievements of students who were empowered to take meaningful action toward global challenges, thanks to the funding from the Government of Canada through the Global Skills Opportunities (GSO) program.

Sharing Planet Earth 

UNESCO Chair in Reorienting Education towards Sustainability

During International Education Week, York’s UNESCO Chair will offer an activity to engage with and among students from all fields of study. Experience the challenge of climate change firsthand with Sharing Planet Earth, an interactive story where we will aim to work together to live together on our shared planet, coping with a number of weather events, rising sea levels, resource scarcity while overcoming inequalities and social injustice. This dynamic activity will foster teamwork, resilience, and a deeper understanding of sustainability impacts.

Take a break from your academic responsibilities and studies at our weekly hangout. Drop in for as little or as long as you’d like to relax, recharge and reconnect with your peers in a casual, fun setting. Glendon Global Dialogues: The Loneliness Epidemic: Connected as ever, yet lonely 

LOCATION: Glendon Hall – Ballroom, 2275 Bayview Avenue Toronto, ON M4N 3M6

Join us for an insightful exploration of loneliness in our hyper-connected world. Despite living in urban areas and having unprecedented internet access, many individuals feel increasingly isolated. This event will delve into the complexities of loneliness, a subjective experience that affects millions, including teens, adults, and seniors across the globe. 

Esteemed panelists include: Gordon Fleet, a leading psychologist studying perfectionism and its connection to loneliness; Patrik Marier, an expert in aging and public policy; and Harry Hobson, founder of Neighbourly Lab, dedicated to fostering social connections. Together, they will examine the role of technology, urban design, and public policy in combating loneliness and propose actionable solutions for a more connected future.

International students are invited to attend this bilingual session to learn what first steps they can take to overcome/manage common life challenges affecting their individual experience in Canada or that of someone they know. Topics to be covered include an exploration of adversities and their impacts, strategies to seek and receive support, and goal setting to rise above challenges.
