Information Sessions for YorkU Faculty
At this workshop, York’s GNL Team will provide in-depth and hands-on guidance to help York University faculty members bring global perspectives and cross-cultural discussion into existing courses.
Some of these “How-to’s” include:
- Learn how to integrate GNL-enhanced activities in existing courses including developing new and/or enhancing existing partnerships through GNL.
- Hear about the experiences of York-GNL faculty course leaders including student learning outcomes and feedback.
- Find out about GNL supports and resources available to York faculty members including the GNL Award of CAD1,000 to support project development.
GNL Workshops for Faculty members, Administration and Program Staff (external to York University)
York-GNL workshops will help you as, faculty members, administrative and program staff, to explore the GNL as a teaching-learning approach and provide in-depth and hands-on guidance (“the how-tos”) to mount your own GNL projects bringing global perspectives and cross-cultural discussions into your classrooms.

As a first step to becoming an official GNL faculty leader, please share your information through this GNL application form. This Form is really meant to capture your ideas, welcome you into the GNL community of practice and help identify any areas of support, so don’t worry about having a fully formed project. York faculty members (course leaders) selected will each receive an award of CAD$1000 to co-develop resources for their GNL course and support GNL initiatives. Note: you will have to make an account on the MoveOn platform to access the form.
Partnership-Matching and Networking
After attending a workshop, attendees are invited to networking event for a brief overview of GNL and to meet with colleagues and potential faculty partners from around the world. These meetings are opportunities to gain inspiration, hear about what your colleagues are doing, and find a partner to work with for your own GNL project. You’ll receive an invitation to register for the event after you attend a GNL workshop.

Recruiting Students to Design Modules on Interculturality, Plurilingual Communication and Information Literacy: Information sessions on October 1st and 2nd, 2018
Do you want to share your cross-cultural experiences, explore the complexity of plurilingual communication, or support the development of information literacy for academic competencies? Do you have strong problem-solving skills? Would you like to take part in experiential learning (and be paid for it)? We invite you to join our team!
If you are bilingual and have an interest in developing a database, designing learning activities or multimedia learning environments, consider joining our Globally Networked Learning (GNL) team to help design 3 modules on interculturality, plurilingual communication, and information literacy, that will be used for a Certificate in Civic and Social Stewardship at Glendon.
Information sessions: Monday, October 1st, 2018 in YH A222 from 2:00-3:00 and Tuesday, October 2nd, 2018 in YH A224 from 10:30-11:30. More information on the project, funding, application process and training will be provided. The application is due by Monday October 15th, 2018. Developing Effective Partnership and Pedagogy for your Internationalized Classroom
This workshop is designed to support faculty members and IT/library staff, who wish to incorporate globally networked learning (GNL) into either existing or future courses and/or other research, or support research/IT support for GNL courses. In the workshop, we will briefly cover what GNL is and discuss its relevance/importance for current and incoming students at York; provide tools and strategies for effective collaboration with faculty/non-academic researchers with whom York U instructors may wish to design a GNL course/module; and review case studies/models of effective pedagogy and curriculum design for an internationalized classroom. Facilitators of the bootcamp will ensure that the session is interactive and that participants gain the step-by-step guidance they need to embark on their GNL project.

Globally Networked Learning Bootcamp: Developing Effective Partnership and Pedagogy for your Internationalized Classroom
The bootcamp and webinar, taken together, will provide a deeper understanding of how to effectively develop partnerships, curriculum and pedagogy, as well as how to integrate various forms of technology for globally networked learning (GNL) courses. Conceptualizing Globally Networked Learning (GNL) courses/activities: Pedagogy, Technology & Partnerships
York University faculty members are invited to participate in an interactive workshop on Globally Networked Learning (GNL) course development. Building on the success of the Fall 2016 sessions, the activity-based workshops will discuss the range of pedagogical strategies and technological approaches to GNL (problem-based learning, global dialogues and shared activities, and the range of technologies to navigate this emerging innovative pedagogy). By examining case studies of successful collaborations from a variety of disciplinary and institutional contexts, workshop participants will learn about GNL partnerships that expand research and teaching collaborations and foster sensitivity to cultural differences in the internationalized classroom. Finally, attendees will gain applied training for conceptualizing new GNL courses or embedding GNL strategies to either co-develop shared activities, or modify existing curriculum with international partners. The Winter 2017 workshops will be co-facilitated by John E. Fowler (Executive Director, Creative COIL Consultants at the SUNY COIL (Center for Collaborative Online International Learning), the GNL Project Team at YorkU, and Lisa Endersby (Educational Developer from The Teaching Commons at YorkU). The 2017 winter-term workshops will serve as preparatory training for the 2017 Summer ‘Bootcamp’ workshops on GNL curriculum design.

Student Focus Group Sessions: Exploring Contemporary Buzz-words in Globally Networked Learning
The concept of Globally Networked Learning (GNL) requires us to re-think the kinds of concepts and skills being taught in the university classroom. As current York students, moving into careers requiring digital knowledge and global skills, we are interested in hearing about your learning experiences and what this means for your future work. In this focus group, we will workshop contemporary buzz-words such as global competence, internationalization, global and digital citizenship, inter-cultural education, and inter-cultural sensitivities, to see how you would like to apply these otherwise abstract ideas to your learning experience at York and your expectations for the future.
