Welcome to the YorkU community! We are so excited to meet you as you begin your university life no matter where you are in the world! Virtual International Student Orientation is a great way to start the first semester and prepare yourself for university life. Although we aren't together in person, we can still come together virtually! York International and so many other supports, services and resources at York are all still available to you no matter where in the world you are. Worried about meeting other students, classmates and new friends while studying remotely? We got you! Virtual International Student Orientation will still be a great way to connect with other international students.

International Student Virtual Orientation Kickoff

This weekend, York experienced a system outage.  But don’t worry, Virtual International Student Orientation is still ON for all scheduled dates.  Join us on one date and time that works for you by registering here.  If you’ve already registered, please still fill out the registration form posted to make sure we have your info!” Note: Information on how to join the session will be sent directly to students who have registered.

During the Virtual Summer International Student Orientation, you can expect to learn about:
  • How to connect to other YorkU students around the world and build a virtual community.
  • Immigration services and how online learning impacts your immigration status.
  • Academic basics and tips for online learning.
  • Health insurance basics for students both in and out of Canada
  • How to connect to your faculties.

Orientation does not end here!  Join us for many of the ongoing orientation activities outlined below that we will have in the summer months.  Topics range from remote academic essentials to managing your health and wellness.  We guarantee that at least one of these sessions or activities is for you.

Remote Learning Academic Essentials May 13 9:00-10:00am Are you wondering what you need to know for your academics as you begin your remote learning journey? This is the session for you - tune in to learn the basic information that you need to know to get you started such as how to use Moodle, western academic culture, academic integrity requirements, and much more. Generating Ideas for Writing May 20 9:00-10:00am Join the Writing Centre to learn how to generate ideas for writing and to get some general good advice and motivation for writing.  You’ll get practical tips for finding good sources, generating good content, and getting started on your paper’s organization. Secrets of Academic Success - Tips from an International Student May 21 9:00-100am Alissia, an international student from the Learning Skills team will share with you key strategies to improve your academic achievement and confidence and which learning skills you most need to succeed at university. Remote Learning Starter Kit May 22 9:00-10:00am Join professors Olga Makinina & Saskia Viegen from the Department of Languages, Literature and Linguistics  who will teach you how to maximize online learning and class participation. Register here.
Making Virtual Connections & Online Safety May 26 12:00-1:00pm
Join YI staff Kelly and Leslie to learn about how you can make connections online and build your support network while also staying safe. They will provide practical tips on what you can do to meet peers, make friends and what you to look for in a virtual community.  Bring your questions and concerns, let's chat!

Writing Thesis Statements June 17 9:00-10:00am A good thesis statement is expected for most papers you will write here at York. But clear, practical advice for writing an effective, clear sentence or two about your paper’s argument can be hard to come by. In this Writing Centre workshop, you’ll get a straightforward definition of a thesis statement, loads of practical tips for creating them, and some practical experience applying the workshop’s ideas to generate your own thesis statements.
