The Nature’s Valley Trust runs an award winning Environmental Education program, which has focused programs from pre-school to adult learner levels. We run eco-clubs and birding clubs in several schools, and use 20 custom designed outdoor classrooms to take learning outdoors. Our lessons are curriculum integrated and ensure children in our region get exposed to conservation work that impacts their local communities. We also host schools for environment days like World Oceans Day, Arbor Week, Water Week, etc. and occasionally have schools camping with us for 3-5 day programs. Our weekly schedule for our EE program varies. The intern is expected to be out with the program at least 2-3 days a week, with the office time used for preparing programs, updating resources and helping with our social media pages.

Position Description

Litter on our beaches is a global concern for conservationists. To effectively manage the problem on the ground, we need to understand not only the various sources of the litter on our beaches, but also the user groups that are contributing disproportionately more waste than others. Once this has been accomplished, a well-designed conservation intervention campaign can be implemented to try to reduce the amount of local litter being left on our beaches. This internship involves lots of hours walking on one of the most amazing set of beaches in the world! Three times a week, from 7am-11am and from 2pm to 6pm, the intern will walk on the beach, documenting all litter encountered and all people using the beach. Using this and other existing data, the intern will help develop a campaign targeting beach users, to educate them and attempt to ensure better litter management on the beach.

UGANDA

Position Description The intern will work closely with the Executive Director and the rest of the COHU staff to support the war-affected youth of northern Uganda by:

  • Paying partial school fees and providing scholastic materials to 163 children ages 11 to 18 who attend 31 primary and secondary schools in Lira, northern Uganda.
  • Operating Barlonyo Technical and Vocational Institute for 120 youth, the majority of whom were formerly abducted by the LRA. BTVI trains students in carpentry, bricklaying and tailoring. COHU has initiated 8 school Income Generating Activities to make the school self-sustaining. The school IGA’s are a piggery, poultry raising, tilapia fish farming, goat rearing, tree nursery, sale of carpentry and tailoring products and school truck rental. Barlonyo is 45 minutes to the north of Lira, which is 6 hours north of Kampala. There are 26 faculty and staff at BTVI.
  • Operating Barlonyo Early Childhood Development Centre for 155 children ages 2 to 7. There are 4 teachers and 1 support staff at ECDC.
  • Operating 6 Income Generating Activities (IGA’s) to enable the caregivers of the 163 beneficiary children to pay a greater share of school fees. These IGA’s are chicken, pig and goat rearing, oxen ploughing, bee-keeping, orange tree seedling planting, tailoring and paper bead jewelry making.
  • Operating the COHU community Library at the Lira office for the 163 beneficiary children teachers from the 31 schools attended by the children and the whole community.
  • Paying university tuition for 20 Aboke girls, who had been held captive by the LRA for 8 years, and paying partial school fees for their 18 young children, all born in captivity.

  • Assistant Program Manager

  • Communications Coordinator

The Communications Coordinator is responsible for creating and engaging with content on a variety of platforms for Shanti Uganda including: social media, newsletters/email marketing, blogs and charity platforms. The Communications Coordinator is the official Shanti photographer and documents the programs and happening of the Birth House and all Shanti projects, events, etc.

  • Research Intern

The Research Intern will be responsible for completing the full process of answering an important research question related to Shanti Uganda’s programming. Topics may include teen pregnancy, teen sexual and reproductive health, barriers to access, client satisfaction with services etc.
